Screw Kermit the Frog: It’s Easy Being Green

A lot of people that I come in contact with share sentiments with Kermit the Frog and think that “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” (OK, I really just wanted to crowbar a Muppets reference into a post.)

They think you need to install solar panels on your home or buy a new hybrid car and that if you aren’t perfect, then there is no point at all.

Being green isn’t about being perfect. To me being green is about making the best possible choices that you can given your current circumstances.

The all in or nothing at all mentality scares away a lot of people from doing anything at all and they continue on with their current ways.

This is one of the reasons that I started a blog to show people simple ways that they can go green. Some of these things people are already doing on a daily basis, but don’t realize that it’s “green.”

Another blog that I check out regularly who has the mindset of, “…making the greenest choices for YOU” is Easy Eco To Go by Julia Johnsen.

That’s a statement that I can get down with. Do what’s best for you. We are each living our own lives and on our own journey. Each of us are faced with different situations on a daily basis and can’t be perfect all the time. Life is too short to be perfect.

Peachy Green also just posted “Go Green Without Going Broke” for those of you who are budget conscious.

Here’s three simple things that you can do today (and everyday). No solar panels required:

So I say, “Screw Kermit the Frog!” It is easy being green. I always liked Animal better.

  1. How about shutting off the lights every time you leave the room? Something simple I know, but how often we forget the little things! That’s not just being green either, but frugal. ;)

Yup that’s a real easy one. There are so many.

  3. There are SO many things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment, and we have to look at the small picture as well as the big picture. Getting involved in community organizations can be a great way to become aware of your own habits and affect the lives of others.

  4. Awww…. I miss kermit the frog… I haven’t watched him since I was little :)

  5. I agree. Sometimes the best green thing for you, isn’t for me. Sometimes it depends on where you live, family size, or preference because there shouldn’t be just ONE correct way to do something. I like having options just in case I can’t do my ideal way for some reason.

    Animal RULES!

  6. I’d like to add another simple way to go green that I just discovered: VINEGAR!
I had a lingering food smell in my house and was out of Febreze, so I researched on the internet…it turns out Vinegar is amazing at doing a TON of things. One is removing odors from practically everything.
I made a 50/50 solution of water and regular white vinegar and sprayed it on all my fabrics, including silks and leather. At first you smell vinegar, but as it evaporates…you smell nothing but freshness. No man made odor…just fresh.
I also use it now instead of Fabric Softener (which is one of the most toxic substances we have in our homes)

  7. Here are a couple more ideas…turn off the tap while you brush your teeth, re-use boiling water for veggies and don’t take baths. I also use make-up brands that offer recycling programs (MAC cosmetics for one). Other than that, heed the wise words of Albert Einstein:

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”

It really keeps me up at night thinking what kind of world we’re leaving our children and I wonder why it’s taking so long to come up with viable bio-fuels? I keep reading all these news stories and seeing blogs about people driving across the UK or States on veggie oil. It must be hard driving a car that smells like a chip shop though!

  9. It is easy to be green but it is not easy to be eco-friendly and to live your life eco-friendly in the modern anthropogenic civilization.

  10. Well, this article has made me realize something; whoever owns the muppets right now (Disney, I think..) is missing a golden opportunity to bring out good ol’ Kermit and make him sing “It’s EASY Bein’ Green” for a national public-service ad campaign. Don’t you think that could be huge?

Just think of all the gen-x’ers and others who grew up hearing that classic song?

  13. Such a good statement. There are so many ways you can go green without having to break the bank and even saving some money.

  14. It really isn’t all that hard to be green. As you said, it’s all about making the right decisions at the right time.

I do know what you mean, though, as far as going green seeming to be this status of sorts. I think it has a lot to do with the media and the way “going green” has been presented to us. It has the taste of a kind of culture.

Nice muppets reference! I keep all my electronics unplugged and shut down when they are not in use. For a second there I thought you were asking us to go thirsty to conserve water, but I had never thought about all the water that wastes. On that topic, how about the portion sizes in most restaurants, they are huge and so much food goes to waste.
