Eco-Safe Cosmetic Tips

makeup.jpgFall is almost in full swing and Fall make-up colors are flying off the shelves.  Mineral cosmetics have been a growing trend over the past few years, but simply buying mineral based make-up does not put you in the clear.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping for make-up.

You must read labels! Shopping for cosmetics should be treated like a trip to the grocery store, read the label and learn what’s in the product.

Chemicals to watch out for:

  • Parabens–a preservative linked to breast cancer, weight gain and hormone disruption.  Its prefixes are ethyl, methyl, butyl, isobutyl or propyl.
  • Talc–contains a chemical that is similar to asbestos and can increase the risk of certain ovarian cancers.
  • Fragrance–this term is used to mask hundreds of chemical ingredients including phthalates which disrupts the endocrine system and may cause reproductive and developmental harm.

Having a plan is key. Ease the pain of shopping for cosmetics by researching what you are looking for first.  Checkout your favorite brands and see what’s new, then check the brands and ingredients on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database at CosmeticDatabase.com

Think outside the make-up package, your application tools matter too. Purchase organic cotton wash clothes and natural sponges that you can wash and reuse.

Some of my favorite eco-safe make-up brands are Ron King Cosmetics, Bare Essentials and Jane Iredale.

Try Ron King’s Mineral Sheer Tint for lightweight coverage all day with SPF20. The model in the photo is wearing Ron King Cosmetics.  Available for purchase at www.bosalon.com

  1. Great post! It definitely pays to read the labels for anything we consume (or wear!).

I’m planning to start my own organic cosmetics company and have searched tirelessly to find suppliers who care about the ingredients they use. I’ve found quite a few who use chemicals I would never offer in my products.

Again, great post…the information in this blog is always worthwhile!

  2. Joie, you’re right about the Talc, as there are many reports pointed out that talc is leading to the happening of certain types of cancers, especially the ovarian cancers!

  3. How about not wearing makeup? What is more natural than that?

  4. It’s obvious that eco-friendly cosmetics are undoubtedly much more useful for your health as well as much more effective:)
